WHALEWATCHING WORKSHOP, PUERTO MADRYN, ARGENTINA
3-5 NOVEMBER 2010
In November 2010, 18 participants from 9 countries and 5
invited participants attended an IWC Workshop on Whalewatching. The report of
the Workshop and the presentations given can be downloaded below. The objective
of the workshop was to provide input for the IWC on the development of a
strategic plan for whalewatching.
The workshop brought together experts from research, management, industry and
interested communities to initiate discussion on the three key identified
themes: (1) research and assessment; (2) management; and (3) capacity building
and development in the context of promoting and facilitating responsible
whalewatching activities. The workshop had a practical focus and worked towards
identifying simple and effective ways to respond to key questions from countries
seeking support in the development of sustainable whalewatching.
The report of the Workshop has been circulated to the Commission and will be
presented to the Conservation Committee at the 2011 Annual Meeting (IWC 63),
along with the report and recommendations from the Conservation Committee’s
working group on whalewatching and the section on whalewatching from the report
of the Scientific Committee to assist the Conservation Committee in the
development of a strategic plan for whalewatching for consideration by the
Commission.
