Southern right whale Workshop

IWC SOUTHERN RIGHT WHALE ASSESSMENT WORKSHOP: Buenos Aires, 13-16 September 2011

It is now over 13 years since the last major IWC Scientific Committee Assessment Workshop that considered southern right whales. The Committee has agreed to hold a workshop focussing on the assessment of southern right whales (Eubalaena australis) in Buenos Aires from 13-16 September 2011. The Steering Committee comprises Brownell (convenor), Bannister, Best, Childerhouse, Crespo, Groch, Iniguez, Kitakado and Sironi

Objectives

The examination of:

distribution and population structure in the Southern Hemisphere;
identification of feeding grounds and links with nursery/breeding grounds;
food, feeding and links with productivity/survival;
biological parameters;
update on historical catches and estimates of original population size;
current stock size and recent population trends.

In the light of this it will consider:

progress on establishment of Southern Ocean Right Whale Photo-Identification Catalogue;
knowledge gaps;
actual and potential population level threats.

On this basis it will:

determine future research needs and the need for conservation plans/actions by region.

Authors writing to submit documents should contact secretariat@iwcoffice.org giving the full title and authorship to obtain a document number (this will be of the form: SC/S11/RW). Completed papers in pdf format should be sent to the same address and will be posted here in due course.

We have agreed that for the workshop we will keep as closely as possible to the new procedure for Annual Meetings i.e. :

Authors must submit papers for circulation by email and inclusion on the IWC website as soon as possible (send the pdf files to secretariat@iwcoffice.org) and certainly before participants leave for the workshop. This is to give those who wish to make paper copies for themselves the time to do so –the deadline will be Thursday 8 September;
Authors who are unable to meet this deadline must bring sufficient paper copies (i.e. 30) for each participant to the Workshop, as well as a pdf version for our archives.
